Golden Rule Vineyards, Willcox AZ

Golden Rule Vineyards grows 10 varieties of wine grapes in the Willcox Arizona area.  They offer tastings at both the vineyard in Cochise Arizona, and at the downtown Willcox tasting room.  On this occasion we decided to try the tasting room in downtown Willcox.

Golden Rule and Copper Horse share the downtown tasting room so you can get two tasting without even leaving your table.  Kind of a nice concept. They are currently attempting to have two additional vineyards brought in as well which would mean a total of four.  For me, that means someone will have to help me walk out, four tastings in such a short span is a lot!  But I love the concept and likely would enjoy it.

The tasting room is an old mercantile from I believe he said the 1880’s, which is cool in itself.  It still has that old time feel to it as well.  He even mentioned that he is pretty sure they built the building around a massive safe that was upstairs in the office area.  The whole set up just has good bones as they say.

We realized after we left that we had never gotten the name of the gentleman serving us.  He was great and filled with information.  Chatted with us about the wines, the area, the building and just in general about the times we live in.

As per the usual he told me the white is better than you think, so I caved and gave it a shot.  It was the 2018 Picpoul Blanc and it wasn’t awful.  I did drink the full tasting, which is more than I would normally do.  I just wouldn’t order a glass.  This isn’t the wine's fault, it is my pallet's fault, she just does not enjoy a white wine.

Then we moved down the list ending with my favorite of their wines the Petit Verdot.  So delicious! We had the pleasure of tasting their wines a few years ago when Carlson Creek featured them as a guest vineyard.  At that time it was the first time I had ever tried a Petit Verdot. I fell in love and ended up buying the last few bottles out.  Now I try a Petit Verdot every chance I get.  All of the reds are great, I won’t even waste your time on breaking them down.  Go try them yourself!

Golden Rule has some really great wines, the tasting room is amazing and historic and I highly recommend that you swing by and have a visit at both venues if you can.

Day three down, be sure to check out tomorrow's feature, High Lonesome Vineyard. You can read yesterday's article on Copper Horse Vineyard, or see all of our Sippin’ September articles here.
