The Pillsbury Wine Company Tasting Room is located in Old Town Cottonwood among the other five tasting rooms in Old Town. Pillsbury has a great venue, even though I think the bar is a tad too small.
The last few times we have been here Rebecca/Becky has been here and she literally ruins every visit we have. She just can’t hold a conversation and doesn’t seem interested at all. Honestly I think it is because she cannot multi task. She cannot both serve wine and talk, it is one or the other. That is fine, I can live with that, but the fact that she cannot ever remember if we are doing a red tasting or a white tasting and each time she pours she asks what we are having and where we are at in the tasting. It is frustrating for sure. Not to mention she doesn’t give us tasting notes. That is tasting room associate 101, right?
On this last visit, we told her we wanted to do a Red Blend flight, and a Red Varietal flight which is how they are listed on the menu. She just was not getting it, so I was pointing to the menus. Still no light bulb. So Derek said a third time that we want a Red Blend flight, and a Red Varietal flight to which she replied that a varietal is a blend. Um, OK technically that could be true since U.S. wines must be a minimum of 75% made from the stated grape variety but I’m not sure that is what she meant.
Aside from that, Sam makes a good wine. The Wild Child is hands down my favorite and has been for years. But all of his reds are tasty. They are worth a sample and even a glass. The bottle price point is reasonable for the wines. I find most of his wines to be on the lighter side and I prefer something a little more on the bold side.
Fun fact, Sam Pillsbury was an accomplished film and TV director long before he planted his vineyard in 2000. Since the Pillsbury Wine Company first opened in 2006, they continue to make award winning wines year after year.
Here is a little insight on the Cottonwood tasting room, it is haunted. I experienced on one occasion myself and it was freaky! I saw a bottle fly five feet off of a shelf, straight out, and then down, with not a single body around it. The gal started cleaning it up without missing a beat, seeming unsurprised. She told us that bottle had been in that exact same spot for more than 3 months without an issue. She then told us that upstairs is an old skating rink, and she will often hear them skating after she closes. But there isn’t anybody up there, because it is shut down and covered in dust. Haunted and I love it!
We should note too that we have had good experiences as well. Val is awesome, as is Eric. So go visit the Pillsbury Wine Company, try the wines, and sit in the comfy couches they have and enjoy the local art on the walls.
