Sand-Reckoner Vineyards is a small vineyard outside of Willcox, AZ. They are situated between the Chiricahua and Dragoon Mountains. They currently grow Malvasia Bianca, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Sagrantino, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Zinfandel.
We visited their tasting room in Tucson, which is located in the ‘Warehouse Arts District’. This is an area where they have renovated warehouses and created eclectic storefronts. At this time please visit their website to make an appointment.
Due to the timing of our visit the room seemed a bit sterile and they were actually using it for storage of wine during harvest. Typically the room is hustling and bustling with folks tasting wine and live music events. We were the only ones in the tasting room on this day so it was a bit quiet allowing for deeper discussions.
Because of the restricted amount of tastings we were limited to what was open. I honestly do not remember all of the ones we tasted but we did get a shot of the menu so that you can have an idea of your options.
We purchased two bottles that we did sample, the 2016 ‘X’ which is a blend of Tempranillo, Petite Syrah, Tannat. Your tasting profile would be red fruit, tobacco, meaty and well rounded. You could have pizza or a really great steak with this one. Actually talking about this one makes me want to open the bottle and have a steak, pronto!
The second bottle we purchased was the 2016 ‘7’ a Syrah and Tempranillo blend. This is one of my favorite blends. A little blackberry, spice and cedar. This is a bold, deep wine, but leans more toward the spice. For me I could just open this bottle, not pairing needed. Just a nice good wine in a pretty glass!
Our visit to Sand-Reckoner was short but sweet, having good conversation, got the scoop on how the area is doing with the pandemic and the future of the tasting room. It seems things are looking good, they said the area has really been supportive and they have done really well. They are ready to open and begin the fun stuff again, but that will come with time.
Please stop by Sand-Reckoner Vineyards, try some really great wines in a cool vibe setting. You will enjoy both, just remember to double check if they are open for walk-ins.
Be sure to check out tomorrow's feature, Charron Vineyards. You can read yesterday's article on Callaghan Vineyards, or see all of our Sippin’ September articles here.
