Travel to Puerto Peñasco in 2020 – Rocky Point Part 1

Travel to Puerto Peñasco in 2020, also known as Rocky Point, looks a little different than in the past. In planning a trip to Rocky Point for next week I did copious amounts of research in preparation.

Travel to Rocky Point starts with entry at the border. Always double check information prior to entry as things are fluid in these weird times.

Entering Mexico

The following items are mandatory:

  • Valid Official ID (you need a passport or passport card!)
  • Reservation Document for Hotel, Rental home or something similar

In addition to the mandatory documentation there is a Health Filter and Rapid Testing upon entry. What does that mean?

  • For every 5th car entering through the health filter, a rapid test will be administered to one person in the vehicle (random selection).
  • 10% of reservations at each hotel and condominium resort will be given a random rapid test, once entry and lodging details are confirmed at Health Filter. Note, be sure to check signage to pick the appropriate lane.
  • Tests are administered by Red Cross Staff and may have a cost of approximately $35 US (700 pesos) and must be paid via debit or credit card. I recommend a credit card because I trust no one when traveling.
  • Your car will be sprayed with a sanitizer at the main beach area of Playa Hermosa
  • They will be doing thermal temperature checks as well.

Accommodations Capacity Limits

  • Hotels & Motels will be at 60% Capacity
  • Resorts, Villas and similar properties will be at 80% Capacity

Beach Regulations

Regulations and hours for beaches which opened August 1st are as follows:

  • Exercise such at walking and running:
    • 6am - 8am:
    • 5pm - 7pm
  • General Recreation:
    • 8am - 7pm
  • Maximum of 10 people in groups
  • Maximum of 5 in tents/shades/umbrellas
  • No glass bottles (COVID-19 remains on glass the longest and besides it is just shitty if something gets broken on the beach)
  • You must have a bag to collect ALL of your garbage (including your cigarette butts)
  • Masks are mandatory going to the beach and when interacting with vendors

Beach Vendor Regulations

Good or bad, your beach vendors will still be there. Beach Vendor regulations are as follows:

  • Beach Entry 6am -8am
  • Mandatory Masks
  • Social Distancing
  • Mandatory Hand Washing System
  • Mandatory Use of a Social Distance Mechanism
  • No Waiters or Attendants Permitted
  • Maximum of ONE assistant per cart who MUST remain with the cart
  • Ongoing Cleaning of Chairs, Tables and Other Equipment
  • Mandatory Use of Recipient for Cigarette Butts
  • Vendors May Not Remain in the Same Place Too Long

Wrap Up

So there you have it, this is what it is like to travel to Puerto Peñasco in 2020, also known as Rocky Point. This is the current information but I am sure it will change as entry into Mexico grows and COVID-19 numbers change.

You should be able to find up to date information at the Rocky Point Visitors Bureau website.

We are booked for this weekend August 7th and 8th, so check back next week to get the real story and real experience. Meanwhile, be smart, be safe and be kind!

Living, loving, drinking, and traveling through life.
