Coronado Vineyards, Willcox AZ

Coronado Vineyards is located just outside of Willcox Arizona and is a short drive of less than 10 minutes.  Easy to get to and a great venue.

We heard through the grapevine (pun intended here) that Coronado had recently sold, the website has not been updated.  However, on March 21st Facebook had a post that they are open and to say Hi to the new owners, so this must be factual information.

The website still states that the owners are Mark and Jacque cook, who originally opened in 2006. I would like to see them update the website so that we are getting current and correct information as wine seekers.

When you pull up the venue is unique and in a beautiful setting.  They have a large parking section, so my immediate reaction was that they must get very busy.

When we walked in, I saw the size of the tasting bar and decided that, yes they must get very busy.  It was a large “U” shaped tasting bar and in non COVID times you could fit a solid 30 - 40 people around it.

The whole venue has a very vineyard style, they offer small plates that sound delicious, but it was 10 am and I was not ready for food yet, just wine. Sounds weird but this is what we were in Willcox for, the wine!

At the time of our tasting they were offering 6 wines and 1 dessert wine.  Not surprisingly I skipped the Riesling and went straight for the Sangiovese and then moved down the list.  None of the wines were bad, but nothing earth shattering either.  As always, my taste buds are different from yours, so go taste for yourself.

The young lady working the tasting bar was not unfriendly, but she did not give warm fuzzies out.  We tried on several occasions to strike up conversation or ask questions related to the wine.  She had one word answers and then would flit off in another direction.  Didn’t really smile the entire time.

Now she might be a very nice person, but wine tasting is not just about the wine, we all know that.  So much of it is about the experience, you want the conversation, you want the smile, the friendliness.  Sadly, this ended our tasting very early and we left within less than 30 minutes of our arrival.

It is worth a stop, to see the venue and try the wines.  Try the food, it sounded amazing!  Let me know if it is good!  Willcox had such a lack of good food, but this menu looked utterly delicious!

Now that we've wrapped up Day five, be sure to check out tomorrow's feature, Keeling Schaefer Vineyards. You can read yesterday's article on High Lonesome Vineyard, or see all of our Sippin’ September articles here.
