Exciting news for all travelers, the “shoes on” era begins! The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has officially announced the end of the long-standing “Shoes-Off” policy at TSA security checkpoints, effective Tuesday, July 8, 2025. Get ready to breeze through security with your footwear firmly on your feet!

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem shared this groundbreaking change, emphasizing that passengers at domestic airports will now be able to keep their shoes on during security screening. This highly anticipated shift is set to significantly enhance the travel experience. This policy change will streamline the TSA checkpoint process, and ultimately reducing those dreaded wait times.

Secretary Noem highlighted that this move is a key part of DHS’s broader efforts to modernize and improve the traveler journey. While convenience is a priority, security remains paramount. Thanks to cutting-edge technological advancements and a robust multi-layered security approach, you can rest assured that your safety will not be compromised.

This initiative is hailed as a significant step towards a “new Golden Age of American travel,” reflecting the administration’s vision for a more efficient and pleasant journey for everyone. Of course, other essential security measures, such as identity verification and Secure Flight vetting, will continue to be in place.

A quick but important caveat

The only exception to this new “shoes-on” rule is for those who are unable to present a REAL ID. Passengers without a REAL ID (or another acceptable form of identification like a passport) are subject to extra screening. The REAL ID requirements for domestic air travel were finally implemented as of May 2025. So, make sure your identification is up to date!

This change follows other recent positive developments from DHS like the “Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease” program. This program was designed to make travel smoother for uniformed service members and their families.

So, next time you’re heading to the airport with your REAL ID or passport in hand, you can look forward to a more comfortable and efficient security experience. It’s a new shoes on era. Happy travels!
